چکیده

We perceive just a tiny proportion of the phenomena that surround us everyday. Sensory Threads is a technologically mediated collective sensing expedition which allows people to explore imperceptible phenomena in the world around them. We present a description of the technical system and reflect on our design decisions. Key questions we are concerned with centre around how to represent imperceptible phenomena in real time both inside a building, and outside, and how to engender a sense of collective engagement. We also consider the value created through the multi-disciplinary work involved in constructing such an experience.

Sensory Threads: Sonifying Imperceptible Phenomena in the Wild

Sensory Threads is a pervasive multi-person interactive experience in which sensors monitor phenomena that are imperceptible or periphery to our everyday senses. These phenomena include light temperature, heart-rate and spatialdensity. Participants each wear a sensor as they move around an urban environment, and the sensor data is mapped in realtime to an interactive soundscape which is transmi...

Effect of imperceptible vibratory noise applied to wrist skin on fingertip touch evoked potentials - an EEG study.

Random vibration applied to skin can change the sense of touch. Specifically, low amplitude white-noise vibration can improve fingertip touch perception. In fact, fingertip touch sensation can improve even when imperceptible random vibration is applied to other remote upper extremity areas such as wrist, dorsum of the hand, or forearm. As such, vibration can be used to manipulate sensory feedba...

Why Forwarded Email Threads are Hard to Read: The Email Format as an Antecedent of Email Overload

Research has shown that excessive email use leads to feelings of being overwhelmed and stressed. Existing coping solutions, which mitigate email overload, address the number of emails and, in consequence, the time spent on emails. These approaches are congruent with existing research on antecedents of email overload. Further coping solutions include addressing email threads. However, we lack a ...

Prestimulus Alpha Oscillations and the Temporal Sequencing of Audiovisual Events

Perceiving the temporal order of sensory events typically depends on participants' attentional state, thus likely on the endogenous fluctuations of brain activity. Using magnetoencephalography, we sought to determine whether spontaneous brain oscillations could disambiguate the perceived order of auditory and visual events presented in close temporal proximity, that is, at the individual's perc...

پیوند رؤیت فؤاد و بصر در معراج پیامبر(ص)

The issue of perceiving God in Islamic theology, philosophy and mysticism is very important. It seems that there is no concern regarding the consensus among the proponents and opponents of perceiving God by the visual sense, though mystics have made a lot of efforts to reconcile the visual perception and intuitive discernment. Of these efforts, a typical example can be found in the interpretati...
